Newfie

The Newfoundland Fisherman's sweater for Howie is done, blocked, and being worn. It passed all of the tests: soft, lightweight, warm, neck not choking, sleeves slightly too long, etc, etc. I'm so happy it's done because now I can start a project for myself!

I just love how this sweater came out. The texture of the knit, the texture of the wool, the colors all make is work. (Howie picked out the yarn by the way).

He was even getting silly with it all - posing for the pictures. I think I've had him watch Project Runway with me one too many times!

Last night I started my Ribby Cardy from Chicknits. I got gauge, then proceeded to cast on using the larger needles - WOOPS!. I figured it out after two or three rows of ribbing, so I ripped and started again. I have about two rows knit all over again, right back to where I started. Hopefully that is not going to keep happening during this project. I'd like a sweater before it gets too cold.....

Finally Finished

As of about one hour ago, Howie's sweater (otherwise known as the afghan) is finally done!
It's been a long time in the making, it kept getting put aside for other projects. But I made the final push in the last week or so to complete it. It's beautiful, it fits great, and it's warm, soft and cozy. No photos tonight though. There's been some packing going on.

On the home front, we finally finished the bathroom! That's been about 19 months worth of tiling, painting, drywalling, and plumber angst. Plumber number 2 finally got the job done right. Long, painful, expensive story that I won't bore you with.

Pictures of both finished projects next week. Tomorrow Howie and I leave for Eastport, ME to do some SCUBA diving. Cold but beautiful is what we hear. It's about as far east as you can go and still be in the US. It's what we Mainers call "Downeast". And it's about 6 or 7 hours from here. Maine is a pretty big state for New England.
Hopefully we'll have some great underwater photos to post!

My only problem is what to bring to knit. I have an almost done sock that's coming along, and after that, I don't know. It might be too late at night to actually plan and pack a new project - what with the gauge swatch I'll need to knit and all.... maybe I'll just wing it! (Famous last words).

MDI

Around here, that stands for one thing only: Mount Desert Island. Home of Acadia National Park. One of the most beautiful places in North America (in my opinion) and right in my backyard. Howie and I go up there at least once a year. We love it in the wintertime because it's absolutely deserted, and we can hike all day without seeing a soul. There's so much to do and see - the place is an absolute jewel. We love it in the summer too because, well, you don't have to bundle up just to go outside. This time we brought Moebius so that meant no kayaking, no bike riding on the carriage trails, but plenty of hiking. I wasn't complaining.
We camped, hiked and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves over Labor Day weekend. Howie had fun taking pictures - I can't take any credit for these shots.

A view over an inlet on our first afternoon. No breeze makes for wonderful water shots.

The quintessential Acadia shot: cliffs, granite and pine trees going right down to a cobble beach.

A shot from one of our hikes. Autumn has arrived!

We even set an alarm and drove to the top of Cadillac Mountain for sunrise. Something I have always wanted to do and never have gotten around to being awake for. It was worth it!

The Bubbles from Jordan Pond. So scenic you just can't believe it.

Ok, this one is better than the last. From atop Beech Mtn, looking out over Echo Lake in foreground and Sommes Sound in background. Scary cliff if you get too close to the edge!

Lobsterman with his traps in Bass harbor. No Maine photo album is complete without the "lobster trap on the wharf" shot.

Moebius enjoying the granite slabs that go right to the edge of the water at the end of a walk through the woods. He went swimming in the freezing water, and even slipped on the seaweed, dunked underwater, and scrambled up on the rocks. He's a crazy dog!

All in all, a very successful camping outing. There was even some knitting done in the car, but nothing accomplished all weekend while we were there. I was either moving or too tired to pick up the needles.

Lacey, Lacey

In my last post I showed pics of a scarf knit for my sister. Here's one more picture of me modeling the scarf before gift-giving:
laceyScarf.jpg

Do I look like I just smelled something bad in that picture?

The pattern is from Plymouth Yarn Co and can be found here.

I got it free with a purchase of their Baby alpaca brush and knit it for myself a couple of years ago. My sister "had to have one" so this one is knit from a different baby alpaca (just like me to throw the ball band away...)

Anyway, so soft, feels great around your neck, a good first lace project, and a great birthday present for your sister!

End of Summer Activities

Here it is, September 1st, the official end of summer. The nights are getting cool, the sun is setting earlier. Up here in Maine we're preparing for our long winter.

The knitting has been picking up speed. I usually don't have too much interest in knitting during the summer because: a. it's hot. b. it's humid. and c. I want to spend as much time outdoors as I can.

The last few weeks have been a little more productive. I'm almost done with Howie's sweater. Yeah, half a sleeve left! I did finish this last week. Just never got around to photographing.

It's a gift for my sister. Sorry if you're reading this and I ruined the surprise. Her birthday was last week but I haven't seen her because she's been on the go ALL summer. Now that her kids are back in school it will be easier to track her down.
Here's on with Moebius doing the sniff test. I think it met his approval.

The other activity that's been keeping us busy around here is this:
woodPile.jpg WoodStacked.jpg

We had two cords of wood delivered. The pile was enormous! We've been stacking a little at a time. Down to less than half a cord left. Howie has been great about keeping on task, doing a little every day. That pile will be gone soon.

We're off for a weekend of camping on Mount Dessert Island. Howie just informed me that his goal is to fill the camera with pictures so I may have lots to post next week.
