On Progress and Purchases

Today is Timmy's birthday, and his sweater is done! Ends tucked, lightly blocked, ready to go. All I need is something to wrap it in to bring to his party tomorrow. I'll post pictures of him wearing it after the gift giving. I'm sure it will be a little big, but that's good for a 10 yo, maybe he'll get a few years out of it.

Today I finally made the trip back to Halcyon Yarn to return the unused rug wool and spend my refund. I did pretty well, only went $10 over my refund amount so it was pretty guilt-free. Ended up with two books that I've been wanting, and some yarn for a scarf for sis. She spied a scarf I had made a couple of years ago, put it on and declared that she "needed it". So I offered to make her one for her birthday - not wanting to give mine up. The yarn for hers isn't exactly what mine is made of, but it's just about the same color.

And just because I can, I'll post a couple of pics of Moebius in the back yard playing frisbee. The trick is to get him to actually give up the frisbee so I can throw it to him. He's a pretty good frisbee-catcher once he lets me have it.

Like the blaze orange hat turned doggie-scarf? He wears that during hunting season so he isn't mistaken for a deer (kind of has the right coloring and he bounces through the woods too). I put it on him whenever we go out without a leash because this time of year, he blends in with all of the brown. See how the orange stands out in the second picture? I can find him anywhere in the woods instead of listening for his rustling.

Not an Olympian

Olympic fever has taken hold..of knitting that is. All the talk is of the Knitting Olympics. While I am a believer in achieving your all, I didn't join up. There isn't any one reason, but the list just kept building as I thought of knitting a project, pushing myself in the two weeks:
1. Already have two projects going: Howie's sweater and Timmy's sweater
2. Timmy's sweater has a deadline - birthday in 9 days!
3. LOTS going on in our lives these days - conferences to attend, lectures to prepare for and give, a house to rent, plus a full time job.
4. Oh yeah, and a friend just announced the birth of a baby boy. I guess that's another project to be knit before he grows too big.

So to decrease the stress on me (and Howie for that matter), there will be no Olympic knitting this year. There hasn't even been any Olympic viewing yet!

I am enjoying everyone's blogging about their projects and I'm cheering for everyone. Just not knitting my own Olympic project. And that's OK with me...

A Little Bit of Sunshine

I went on a whirlwind weekend vacation to Florida this past weekend. Three full days, three nights, and a late night arrival back in Maine makes for a tired Monday morning. How wonderful to feel warm sunshine on my face in the middle of winter! I was going to take pics of my WIPs before I left so I could see before and after pictures, but the camera was out of batteries, had to recharge and no time to recharge them. So here are the pics after return.

Made some progress on the Timmy sweater. Back and front complete. Love the one big cable.

I would have done more, but I didn't read ahead in the pattern (a problem I seem to have) so I was unaware that the sleeves are knit from the shoulders down and I didn't have a needle to stitch the shoulders together.

Also made some progress on the Howie sweater. I'll post pattern and yarn detail later.

This is the front:

And a closeup:

Howie calls it "The Afghan" because it is so wide, especially compared to the kid-size sweaters I have been knitting. And it is quite warm while I'm knitting. The back is done, working on the front. I've been working on this for months, keep putting it down when other time-sensitive knitting creeps up. I picked up the pattern while in Newfoundland a couple of years ago and have already knit one for my nephew. Howie saw that one and decided he had to have one. Soon he will!
